It’s been a while, but I have been going back to the 3rd book of the Onmouji series (title pending) with only the final edit to go through. Here’s a snippet that happens late-ish in the book.

Nic stared at the large waira, digging its way into the grave with its single-clawed hands. “That has to be the ugliest youkai I’ve ever seen.”

The waira barely paused long enough to shoot a glare at him, the two large claws making steady progress.

“I think you insulted her,” I said.

“It’s a her?”

“Waira with red spots are female,” I said. “And she’s a sweetheart. I found her guarding an abandoned shrine. They’re very loyal and you’ll never find a single rat around the area.”

The waira made a pleased hacking noise and let out a loud fart.

“…I’ll take your word for it,” Nic said.
