      1. Ooh, Ireland. Off the top of my head: Banshees, leprechauns and will-o-the-wisps. I bet there’s plenty of good stories. England has some nice haunted castles too, I heard 🙂

  1. Hi,
I tried to find contact info to send you a private message and couldn’t find one, so I figured this was the next best thing. I just finished reading Let Sleeping Dogs Lie (that ending was intense!) and I’m looking forward to reading book 2.

One thing I noticed in Chapter 16, when Ren, Haru, Nic, and Feng-yu were sitting up on the roof and Haru points out that the reason no one else comes up to the roof is because Ren charmed the door to shock other students, Ren responds, calling it negative reinforcement.

This is actually an example of positive punishment – adding (positive) something bad (the shock) to reduce a particular behavior (trying to go onto the roof).
Negative reinforcement, on the other hand, is taking away (negative) something (generally something unliked) in order to increase a behavior (reinforcement). For example, taking an advil (the behavior in question) to get rid of a headache (the removal of something negative) will increase the chances that you will take an advil the next time you have a headache (reinforcement).

The critical thing to remember is that the positive/negative refers to whether or not something is being added (positive) or removed (negative), whereas the reinforcement/punishment refers to whether or not the goal is to increase the behavior (reinforcement) or decrease the behavior (punishment).

Thanks again for writing these stories. The first one actually reminded me of Kaze No Stigma, only where the main character’s friends also have various powers and abilities, so their own powers don’t have to be hidden all the time, but only from the general public. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what kind of craziness happens at Ren’s ceremony.
